Dr. Kathryn Bibby was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, and graduated from Dental School at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. She then worked for two years in hospital dentistry, treating patients with complex medical or dental problems or facial injuries. Dr. Bibby experienced braces first hand as a teenager, but there were no training programs available in New Zealand at that time. After applying to several schools in North America, she was thrilled to be accepted at her first choice, the University of Toronto. This program was unique in that it offered training in a wide range of orthodontic techniques including functional (orthopedic) as well as fixed appliance (braces) therapy. She enjoyed both the clinical component and the research aspect, winning an Award of Special Merit from the American Association of Orthodontists for her Masters thesis.
After graduating with a Master of Science and orthodontic diploma in 1993, Dr. Bibby moved to Yellowknife where she also had the opportunity to provide orthodontic services in Inuvik & Baffin Island. It was extremely rewarding to transform these patients' smiles and lives through improved access to orthodontic care. Dr. Bibby established her practice in Nelson in 1996, becoming the only resident orthodontic specialist in the West Kootenay region. She continues to keep abreast of the latest research and techniques through online learning, attending several orthodontic continuing education courses per year, and through being an active member of the Canadian and American Associations of Orthodontists, as well as the BC Society of Orthodontists.
Dr. Bibby and her husband Garry love the West Kootenay region and the people and enjoy many of its recreational offerings (including downhill and cross-country skiing, running and bike riding) with their young sons. She is a strong supporter of the Kootenay Lake Hospital foundation, Nelson Nordic Ski Club, & Salvation Army, along with many other community organizations, and she sponsors a child in Bolivia.
My career began when I was 20 in a general dental practice, and after I went traveling to Australia I came home in need of a new, fun job. That is how I found myself working with Dr. Bibby and the rest of our great team! Working at the front desk of an orthodontic office has proven to be the perfect place for me since I love to work with kids and have a great memory for names and faces. I also have a first-hand appreciation for what our patients go through since I had braces as a teenager and as an adult. I love food, music, reading, spending time with my friends and family, and traveling every chance I get.
In 2005, shortly after completing the Certified Dental Assistant program, I started working for Dr Bibby; I didn't know very much about orthodontics at the time but was up for the challenge of learning all about this aspect of dentistry. A few months after becoming an employee I also became a patient and went through two years of treatment in braces. I've been working here for a few years now and it still seems like everyday there is something new and exciting to learn about and I look forward to building on my knowledge and skills for many years to come.
I grew up in the Kootenays and have always appreciated all this area has to offer; I enjoy hiking, camping, golfing, boating, and biking in my spare time.
I was raised in Winlaw, BC. I am married with two children. In 1992 I graduated from the OUC Certified Dental Assisting Program. After which, I worked in Castlegar until the spring of 2001. I started with Dr. Bibby, where I have been ever since. Working here is fulfilling, especially when we get to see the fabulous smiles!! My interests are traveling, boating and spending time with family and friends
I became a Certified Dental Assistant in 1983 after attending EKCC which is now called College of the Rockies. Previous work experience in Grand Forks, Thunder Bay and Vancouver led us to the Kootenays where my husband found a job in Castlegar. I was happy to find work in the orthodontic field with Dr. Bibby for the past 15 years.
My family loves skiing and spending time at the beach. There is so much to see and do here it's endless. We attend the Covenant Church and love this community!
